Drywood Termites

Incistermies snyderi, Cryptotermesbrevis and Incisitermes minor

Description: Soldiers (large, yellow-brown heads) have teeth on the inside of the mandibles. The head is rectangular or plug-like. Wings have three major, pigmented veins and several cross veins along the front edge of the wing. Swarmers of drywood termites are 1/2 inch in length and may fly during the day or night depending on species.

Life Cycles: They have a distinct life cycle with several castes: eggs» immature» soldier» pseudergate» nymph» reproductive.

Where to Look: Six-sided fecal pellets falling from infested wood is a good clue to drywood termite activities. Drywood termites do not need soil contact and do not construct mud tubes between the soil and wood in homes. They may be found feeding in wood, paper products and products made from paper or wood. They also may be found feeding on trees.

Eastern Subterranean Termite

Reticulitermes flavipes

Description: Soldiers(large, yellow-brown heads) do not have teeth on the inside of the mandibles. The head is rectangular. Swarmers are 3/8 inch in length and appear during the day, usually during the spring months, but they may also appear during the fall. Wings have two major pigmented veins along the front edge.

Life Cycles: They have a distinct life cycle with several castes: eggs» immature» soldier» pseudergate» nymph» reproductive.
